I need to replace my front fork on my MTB (excuse any ignorance i am a road cyclist)
It is a 96 Giant Cadex 1 and instead of forking over tons of money for a new one I was just going to purchase one off of eBay. My question is how do I know what size to get? Thanks

you need to find out the Steerer Tube Length once you find this out you can get a fork to either match that length or a longer one and cut it down to fit your headset.

See if you have a 1" or 1 and 1/8" steerer tube diameter. See if you have a threaded fork, with a quill stem or if you have a threadless fork, where the stem slides over the steerer tube then bolts in to be secured. Do you want a suspension fork or not? If your bike didn't have one it could really reek havoc on how the bike handles if you put one on, due to the bike having "pre '98" geometry.

But really, don't buy a fork off ebay. You will get screwed.

Remove the fork and take some measurements..

Find out if Mountain Bikes use a standard size on the frame..and forks..

I looked for your Model useing SEARCH..and it really is not listed anymore..

I'm guessing the 96..means 1996/??

You may want to consider a new design..just for safety.

by ability of including larger end factors on a low end motorbike, you will reason larger placed on on each thing else, making the motorbike fail even quicker than it often might. The motorbike became into designed- as a results of fact the producer says- for informal driving. in case you do no longer have confidence that the motorbike will fail if subjected to abuse as reported interior the proprietors instruction manual, bypass forward... you will quickly be wearing a helmet finished time, with drool cup linked. there is likewise the geometry and shape of each section to evaluate. The return and forth of a sparkling fork ought to be interior 10mm of the previous one. If the fork has 50mm return and forth (i assume yours is on the ingredient of this) then the main return and forth a sparkling fork might have is 60mm... no longer even well worth doing. you in addition to might might desire to evaluate the headset, the fork steerer length, and different issues for the fork, and we're not even touching the brake yet. And confident, in basic terms as a results of fact it has cool paint and "seems" reliable, the physique is likewise junk. The dropouts (the place the rear wheel mounts) are skinny stamped steel, the welds appear like they have been squeezed out of a toothpaste tube, and the backside bracket shell is so skinny you need to weigh down it like a lager can. the pinnacle tube is possibly shrink somewhat than machined, and each and all the tubes have welded seams (oh confident they do, they're in basic terms complicated to work out with paint on them). seems ain't each thing.
