Look into cyclocross bikes. They have the ability to have both road tires or knobby tires (and have the clearance needed for the brake pads), so they are adaptable to whatever kind of riding you are doing today. They are specifically designed for both on and off road riding. Linked below is a good, not excessively expensive XC bike. You can find them from other big dealers as well.

Unless you are looking to be a competitive road biker, I'd get a mountain bike. You can get different tires/wheels on the mountain bike if you want a smoother road ride. Conversely, you can't put mountain tires on a road bike. Mountain bike with a front suspension works great for most trail conditions

A road bike won't be able to go in trail.

A mountain bike is not good on the road but it works

It depends on the ratio road/trail you want to do.

if you do 10% road/90% trail buy a mountain bike.

I don't know them very well but hybrid bike can do the job in both place. So if your ratio will be 90%road/10% trail maybe the Hybrid is your best choice.

Your seller at your local bike shop will be able to give you further notice

I would buy a mountain bike first, since you'll be able to swap out the knobbies with some slicks and ride it on pavement.

I wouldn't get a road bike first, unless you live in a place that doesn't have alot of traffic, nicely path roads with bike lane.

To sum it up. Mountain bikes are more versatile.

Mountain bikes CAN do both but road work needs a road bike unless you are just cruising for fun. If you are to have one bike and like trails, make it a mountain bike. Avoid hybrid bikes, they do neither well but are great for commuting to classes.

get an aluminium framed hard tail bike with front suspension, somethingk like the GT avalauch has got a switch that you can lock the front forks, if u had 2 sets of tyres, some slicks and some knobleys, would be ideal on or off road

If you buy a mt. bike you'll hate it on the road.

If you buy a road bike, you'll wreck it on the trails.

If you buy a hybrid, you'll hate it on the roads and trails.

Conclusion: pick between road and mt., and buy the best bike you can afford. Save your money and buy a second bike later.

flow to three motorbike shops and you are going to be waiting to discover a good motorbike for decrease than $4 hundred..according to hazard below $3 hundred in case you will detect a used kind/tradein. bypass the disc brakes on greater fee-effective motorcycles, they at the instant are not something yet concern and extra weight. I used my mountain motorbike for purely what you describe for years. I did holiday a brilliant form of off-street, yet that became into earlier i in my opinion have been given into mountain cycling, so it wasnt plenty greater that entertainment using, not real 'mountain cycling' down depraved paths, etc. I rode on some Bontrager convenience B 26"x1.ninety 5 tires as a compromise; they have a smoothe midsection tread, and a few knobs on the shoulders that may additionally assist you nook in the airborne dirt and airborne dirt and dirt. at last i offered an entire 2d set of wheels and placed some one million.5" slicks on them for street, and placed some 'real' mountain motorbike knobbies on the different set of wheels so i could swap certainly.

i would go for a cyclecross bike. its about 50/50 with road and mtn. if you are going to do about 70% mtn and 30% road then i would go for a mountain bike.

I just rode my bike in a bike-a-thon on a Roadmaster and it rides pretty good and my brother rode on a Mongoose.
