Trek or Specialized?

Question

I am looking for a new bike in the 500-600$ price range i want a mountain bike for these trails that are behind my house and some abandoned railroad tracks near me. And also a little commuting to work and stuff (gas is killer). I have been looking around and i have decided i might want a Trek or Specialized but i am not really sure what one. I need a bike that is really durable and wont break on me since i am a pretty big guy (240lb 5.9") any ideas??

An entry level Trek is comparable to an entry level Specialized. For your budget, you can find plenty of mountain bikes, different manufacturer and geometry.



Since you already narrowed the kind of bike you need and want, it's time to go to different bike shops and test ride them. Go to various bike shops and try them all. Each bike has different geometry, feel and ride. The only way you can figure out which one suits you best is by test riding a bunch of them. Try at least 5: Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Gary Fisher, Marin, etc.



For your size, you might want to consider a 29er hardtail. It is right within your budget.

Well out of the two, the specialized range is by far the best. They have the biggest range of mountain bikes that all have different features.

Before choosing one, you must think if you would need big thick tyres or just nobbly tyres that don't have much friction(get the nobbly tyres if you are doing road cycling aswell, as these have less friction which make the bike run smoother and faster). If it is just prodominantley off road cycling, then get the Specialized range. They are by far one of the best mountain bike companies around.

As far as your weight, get a 21" frame, which is stronger than the 19".

A bike won't break on you no matter what, but if it is a small bike and there is big weight going on it, it will cause the bike pressure which leads to alot of breaking parts.

If i were you, i would go for a Specialized Enduro SL. It is a VERY good bike with shock, which helps for the shock absorbance.

As a Trek dealer, I of course would have to say Trek

BUT

The reason why we are a Trek dealer is because they are slightly better than Specialized, at least by the numbers.



Trek is the #1 bike shop brand bike in America (by the numbers), and they often go head to head with Specialized, sometimes even copying eachothers paintschemes.



About 10 years ago we thought about picking up Specialized, but when the representative saw our massive Trek floorspace, he said he wanted the whole far wall to be exclusively Specialized, or no deal.



They are very comparable, but in my opinion you would do well on a Trek 4300. The MSRP is $479, or for $100 more you can get it with disc brakes, but I don't think you'll need them. Comes in black, and Treks have a LIFETIME warranty on all frames, with 1-2 years for parts.



At 240lbs if you want durability and longevity, you can't go wrong with a guarantee like that.

I would go to local bike shops that sell both, find out which bike in the range is most suitable for you, then ring around and see where you get the best deal. It won't matter which brand. You might even find another bike shop bike brand ( ie not walmart) is better for you in terms of price and size. Don't limit yourself to just those two brands. Pretty much all bike shop brands are comparable quality. Steer clear of discount store bikes, make sure you get a good fit, and no rear suspension, and you can't go wrong.

go for a giant terrago trail or a specialized hardrock or rockhopper. i have the rockhopper and it couldn't be better
