I love Specialized, pretty much everything I own is Specialized, however the Trek 6500 is definitely the best bike between the two. The shock has 32mm stanchion tubes vs the Rockhopper's 28mm...better handling. The brakes are Shimano vs. the Tektro brakes on the RH....Guaranteed quality with Shimano. Also Shimano hubs on the Trek, once again guaranteed quality. Both Trek and Spec have excellent customer service in case of warranty issues. The Specialized has two available colors, which is prob why it is spec'd lower than the 6500. It costs more to give people choices, so they had to sacrifice some on the components. They both have lifetime warranties on their frames. If it was my dime I'd get the Trek, and then I'd install Stan's no Tubes and drop a pound of rolling weight.

Specialized because trek frames arnt very good and specialized has better drive train, wheels, tires grips, seatpost, handlebars stem and saddle. Trek has a nicer fork and thats it. If you decide to go with the trek, replace anything bontrager because they are the worst components ever made. If you have the budget it is definatly worth giving the SL expert a chance. Almost everything is upgraded form the normal SL but both specialized bikes are stellar and the trek should be sold at walmart with the bikes it is at the same level with.

i would go with the trek. they have the best warranty on components thats better than any other brand out there. but really if your going to spend that much on a bike . you should get a beginner full suspension. treks fuel EX is a good choice with the evo-link rear suspension rocker that has a really sturdy one piece design stronger than a specialized, oh and it has a rock shox tora SL front fork with turn key lockout, adjustable preload, and a 120 mm travel
