What disc wheel hub, spokes and rim combination are the strongest for a long tour. 15,000 km+

It isn't only the strength you should consider but also the ability to maintain them during the tour.



Make sure that the rims are double or triple wall- 36 spokes are generally plenty (and common) and 14 gauge stainless steel spokes with brass nipples are absolutely essential.



I would personally avoid disc brakes for a touring bike and go in favour of good quality cantilever brakes or dual pivot sidepulls. Parts are much easier to obtain should you have a problem.



I have found that Mavic Open Pro rims coupled with Shimano Ultegra hubs is a great combination, but for severe use I might opt in for a pair of bulletproof (but expensive) Phil Wood hubs.

Look at the wheels used on tandem bicycles. 48 spokes in 14 gauge laced four across. Tandem hubs with 145 mm spacing. 700 x 35 mm tires.

Or build the same wheelset using a 26" mountain bike rim.

First bicycle below uses a tandem rear wheel and is setup for a disc brake.
