I broke my new bike, I need to know what kind of a Crank is best for me?

I bought a cheap bike, And then on a ride the front crank arms stripped and fell off. So the crank set is now stripped.

I dont know much about bikes but I live in Portland which is the bike capitol of the US "self proclaimed" and I want to get into it.

My bike is a 27in cheapo mountain bike. I need a new crank and figured Id get a good one to last. Im 6'3 and 240. Iike to ride fast and hard so I need something that wont break the bank but is good for me.

Oh, and if you have input on a new back spindle thingy, You know, the teeth things on the back wheel, they are bent already. Give me some info please

First, define "cheapo". Is it a lower-price-point model by a major bike maker or is it a K-Mart special? If it's a box-store bike, you might as well scrap it and save up for a decent bike. If it's a 3-piece crank, I'd say stick with a Shimano LX crank - good quality for not too much money.



If you are referring to the cogs on the rear wheel, then it's the cassette that will need to be replaced. If you swap out your cassette, it's a wise idea to swap out to a new chain while you're at it, especially if the previous set was ridden hard. New cassettes will skip on old, worn chains just like new chains skip on old, worn cassettes - best to replace both at once.

I agree with Jay P. Cut your losses and buy at a bike shop. If you're riding hard enough to do that kind of damage, you ride like me and I'm 6'3 210 lbs. The cost of a good crank will cost you as much-if not more than this bike is worth. Then you'll have to worry about another low quality part that will need to be upgraded. In the end, it could cost you more than just buying a sound bike from a bike shop anyway.

I'm 6'3 and 230 and ride a carbon road bike. I doubt that's what you want but my view about this is you get what you pay for. At your size a go to one of Portland's good Bike shops and invest some money in a reliable bike. Most of the major manufactures will have a warranty and will eliminate some of your grief.

Personally, I would not waste any money on this bike. My sense is that it is the kind of bike you buy in Walmart or Sears. These are cheap, but also do not last. If you are going to do any fixing or upgrading, you are better off heading to a bike shop and saving up for something that you give you some more years.

I am sorry to say it, but I think I would look into a better bike. I have found out the hard that you get what you pay for when it comes to mountain bikes.
