I know you are supposed to oil it after every ride, but how often do you really need to? I ride about 25-50 miles a week on my road bike, and I just had a chain break mid-ride. I am wondering if it is due to poor chain maintenance . . .

wow, good job staying healthy with all those miles. Anyway, you don't have to. But riding that avidly could mess it up. When you ride over a mile in weather 40 degrees and below, you should grease once a month. In the summer you should be fine.

The only other time to grease you chain is when your chain falls off. Especially in cold weather.

I don't think your incedent had anything to do with maintence, unless its cold. Maybe just your stock chain ( Stock I assume) was weak. Just make sure you do it when its cold and when it falls off and you'll be fine

On a motorbike with a derailleur, that's substantial for the chain to be wiped sparkling and lubricated many times to determine that the gears to paintings superb. I do mine various situations each and each week. regardless of if that's complete that many times, the chain lasts longer and so does the cassette, saving money on new aspects which may well be very costly on a intense end motorbike. while you're driving a million hour on a daily basis, you should wash and oil your chain approximately each and every third day. It in simple terms takes approximately 5 minutes or much less as damaging to spending lots extra time in case you permit issues bypass
