My bicycle seat is hurting my butt. I need a comfortable seat. The pain is keeping me out of the saddle.

Ah yes...the quest for the Holy Grail continues. First it would help to know what type or style of bicycle you have & how far you plan on traveling. Most bikes aren't meant for or designed to travel more than 5 to 10 miles at the most. THE most comfortable type of bike for longer trips is a road bike or possibly even a "touring road bike". I own 2 touring bikes & one straight road bike. ALL THREE have Brooks Leather Saddles on them. Why leather? In those famous words of the late cycling guru Sheldon Brown...

"Leather saddles have only one advantage over plastic, but it is a big one:

1. They are much more comfortable!"

Even your question shows (pardon me) lack of knowledge. It's NOT a seat - it's a SADDLE. You sit IN a seat. You sit ON a saddle. W-I-D-E, soft, squishy, gel-filled saddles are NOT the answer. Oh sure...some have a slight amount of gel in them. But most go overboard.

Only your "sit bones" need support. W-I-D-E, soft, squishy saddles do NOT support your sit bones. Padding and/or gel is like water flowing. It will take the path of least resistance. Just as soon as you plant your butt on the saddle, all that padding and/or gel flows AWAY from your sit bones & TO areas of soft tissue & blood vessels - squeezing them off causing MORE PAIN!

Want or need the MOST comfortable piece of leather you'll ever sit on? Get a Brooks Leather Saddle!!! Yeah...they're pricey but worth every penny!

Go to a bike shop & discuss your options with them. Brooks makes a wide range of saddles for lots of different bikes.

A comfortable saddle is one which provides support where it is needed and eliminates pressure anywhere else. Although it may defy your reasoning the LEAST comfortable saddle has the MOST padding.

Everyone has different butts so the most comfortable saddle for me would not necessarily be the most comfortable one for you. The only general suggestion I could offer is to AVOID heavily padded saddles and try several... Performance Bicycle Shops both online and in-store offer 100% satisfaction so trying different saddles for a week at a time may be your best bet.

That being said, it may also help to insure that your existing saddle is adjusted correctly- front to back, tilt, and height can make a profound difference and will cost nothing.

It takes time to get use to the saddle stay away from the big gel and soft ones they may feel good at first but they pinch off nerves and blood vessels. Cycling shorts help a lot.

I made a big mistake going on a twenty mile bike ride the first time in the spring. The 10 miles out wasn't too bad but I had to get off and walk quit a bit on the way back. I had to go through butt training all over again. The next winter I had a trainer to say in shape. My legs were fine it was just butt pain. I was even in better shape the next spring.

WTC makes some nice comfortable saddles. I have the speed V on two of my bikes.

This is a novice cycling issue. As your butt gets in better shape the issue will become far less f a problem. The search for the "best" saddle is a search for the holly grail. But since you asked. My favorite is the a terry 'liberator'.

To add but one point to saddle fit: Specialized dealers have a device to measure your sit bones width so you can start with the correct size saddle then narrow it down to gel/no gel, a cut out or not. Helps speed selection up considerably. It is high density memory foam you sit on, you get up, they add 2 bearings that self-center in the depressions caused by your sit bones, and measure the distance. NO, they don't have to touch your butt to size you.

Sometimes you can completely change the feel of your saddle just by adjusting the angle it's mounted at. Check under the saddle to see if your seatpost has any adjustments.
