What kind of bike should I get for commuting/camping?

Question

I'd like to take a weekend backpacking trip with my bike as my transportation. It's about a 30 mile ride, mostly highway, but I'd then be riding it throughout the fairly rugged campsite. I just want the bike to be extremely light, (made of at least aluminum, if not carbon fiber,) and extremely dependable. Any suggestions? Brands and models/model numbers are nice. Thanks.

the bike that hear is the best for camping and traveling with all ur stuff is a Surly long haul trucker. In the past couple years It as become a very popular bike in the traveling community for its... well everything. i Have a friend that as one and its such a great ride, I was convinced into saving up for one even though I dont go tour camping and wouldn't need one.



check out the Surly Long Haul Trucker, awesome bike for what its built for. and think about getting a brooks saddle. there like sitting on butter because over time they form to the shape of ur ***.

Most any bike will work for a 30-mile trip. Add camping and gear, and a decent Hardtail mountain bike around $400 on up will suit you best since you will be riding in the woods and such once you get there. Once you really get into touring and such, then look at the Surly LHT as its a great value.

I used to live in a town where I had to use a combination of rough dirt trails and paved road to get to work and I had a Gary Fisher Kaitai. I love that bike, smoothest ride I've ever had on both surfaces. It's a hybrid, suited for all but the roughest off-roading but not so aggressive as to make it a lot of work to get moving on the asphalt. If you're going to be doing both commuting and recreation on trails I would hesitate to look into this bike or one like it.

Personally I love taking my cyclocross (Bianchi) on little camping trips. I also love taking my Hybrid (Trek) for short overnight trips.



I would guess it depends on your comfort level and where you are riding.
