My bike chain rusted from being outside. I have a hybrid mountain bike. What kind of chain do I need? Is it easy enough to replace myself by watching a youtube video instruction, or should I leave it to a professional?

if your chain is badly worn it may not mesh correctly with the gears on the back of your bike. You can try removing the rust with WD-40 and a rag if it isn't too bad.

If your bike is stored out side be sure to keep a light coating of chain lubricant (not 3 in one or WD-40 ) on the chain. This will help prevent it from rusting. When you purchase a new chain you may want to one with a rust inhibiting coating, a good example is the KMC rust buster series http://www.kmcchain.us/kmcproduct.asp?pid=4829&bsid=33&ssid=570 .

Count the number of gears on the back of your bike and make sure your chain is compatible.

5/6/7/8 cogs in the back all use the same chain. 9 speed and 10 speed chains are thinner. I would reccomend having it done at a bike shop, as others have noted you will need a chain breaker http://www.ebay.com/itm/SuperB-Bike-Chain-Breaker-Repair-Tool-All-Sizes-600-001-/220546641708 which will cost you about the same as the labour for some one to install it for you.

Go to places like Wally World ,Target ,K-mart they know best about bicycles I said this for awhile on here a joke. I have a hybrid too the real best advice they are trained professionals at a local bicycle shop at your main chain ,tires, rims ,tune ups there.

Go to Walmart and get their multispeed chain for $10 and a chain breaker for $5. Count the number of links and cut to the same size.

If you need to ask, take it to a bicycle shop. And don't leave it outside anymore.
