I live in San Francisco and just got a vintage mercier bike frame for my birthday. I so want to start building this bike, but don't know where to start. What parts do I need to build a basic fixed gear? Any input is very appreciated. I know nothing about bikes.. Thanks a bunch!

WOW

Fixie in SF? I agree with 1st answer. Make sure you know what your getting into. I see questions from people on here asking if they can get lower gears for their MTB for riding in SF.

If you're sure you want to do it, make sure you got a very good front brake, get experience riding in flat areas and build some monster power in your legs.

Parts that's easy:

track wheels - flip-flop rear is best.

tires, tubes

saddle

seat post

front brake & lever assembly - best you can find

bottom bracket

crank and chain ring

matching chain

rear cog(s)

pedals

handlebars

stem

grips or bar tape

if your frame and fork are put together now - that's about it.

Good luck and don't get killed.

You should read these articles by the late, great Sheldon Brown.

Also, unless you are an experienced cyclist, you may want to consider building the bike into a single-speed rather than a fixie. A single-speed will be much easier and safer to ride with the hills and traffic in San Francisco.

Hope this helps.

there are several books as well as online resources . I would look at nashbar or performance bikes online for parts you will need.

You will also want to get a good quality set of bike tools. Building a bike is a lot of fun good luck

a speedy answer is "No". At 5'11, the Trek 3700 18" Medium physique has a staggering tube length (22.40 4" ) it is too short for you. i could say choose for the nineteen.5" Medium for a 23" useful staggering tube length or possibly a 21" super physique with 23.4" useful staggering tube. in spite of the undeniable fact that, based on the counsel you offered, an authority in bike length setting up could enable you recognize that greater counsel is mandatory to be certain the "suited" bike physique length for you. counsel which includes inseam measurement, attain, torso measurement and a rider profile on what form of using you do (agressive path, xc racing, long climbs, descents, etc.). i'm not an authority yet i know that looking the "suited" bike physique length is severe beacuase your entertainment, convenience, coping with, performance and expertise-progression relies upon on it. subsequently, I propose which you flow to a bike shop that sells the Trek 3700 so as which you will demo numerous sizes, attempt them out and holiday them (even purely on the parking zone). The bike shop could additionally suggestion you on what physique length suits you. additionally, in the previous you're making the acquisition they are able to even dial on your splendid saddle top/place, stem length as nicely as handlebar top. What i'm announcing is that not something beats actual attempting out and actual setting up. i'm 5'8" 140lbs. I also have a Medium bike with 23" useful staggering tube length that's suited for me because of the fact it is short sufficient for prompt coping with on technical terrain and long sufficient for flow united states rides and climbs. i take advantage of a 90mm stem and a 16mm setback seatpost to center my weight on the bike. each and every so often i think of even a 23.5" super physique additionally will in good shape me nicely (with a shorter stem and directly seatpost).
