How does someone connect a connector pin/link on a bicycle chain safely and be sure its secure? I have looked at the info sheet but it doesn't give clear instructions.

you need to drive it in with a chain tool. Don't use pliers, you'll never get it right.
I don't even bother with putting pins in any more. Just buy a SRAM power link. It is compatable with most chains and Shimano works perfect with it. It's a single link and you put it in place of the link you want to connect and pop it together. then the force of you pushing down on the pedal pops it in the rest of the way and it is unbreakable. it;s so much easier

If it is a no-tool chain, then use a pair of pliers. The link is designed to tighten under tension so won't come undone. If it is a normal chain, you may need a link extractor tool. (you may need one of those anyway to resize a no-tool chain.
