absolutely wear a helmet...and gloves which protect your hands from getting all scraped up in a fall-they are the first thing you put down, reflex action.
in general on descents it's really important to keep your weight back...the opposite of on climbs where your weight needs to go forward. lots of mtn bikers actually lower their seat on descents to help sit back and to get even more weight down and back. but you have to stay balanced of course.
as for bike brands, there are tons of good ones. you need to have a budget in mind and what type of riding you will be doing and we can help from there.
in any case it's a fantastic sport!

Brand: Specialized;Model: depends on the finacial situation Hardtails are the way to go for efficiency but you can definetly have more fun on a softtail. Front suspension allows for better front brake performance. You can get on the brakes harder thatn traditional forks without goin over the bars.Never use all front brake or all rear brake. Use a little of both it is better for your tires and you slow down faster.

Wear a helmet! Make sure your bike has rear and front shocks. don't actually sit on the seat... stand with your knees bent to absorb the shocks of bumps. This stuff is probally obvious but I learned it the hard way.
