Hi guys, i have a bike that has v-brakes. since now i have become a more serious mountain biker i want to upgrade my v-brakes too disc brakes. I was just wondering how can i find out if my bike is able to install a disc brake system onto it. Recommendations for good disc brakes are welcome (Nothing expensive plz).

Unless your bike frame and fork have a place to mount the calipers, and unless your wheels are able to have a rotor mounted to them, disc brakes are a waste of your time and money. You're better off getting a new bike.

But if your wheels and your bike frame are set up to accept these parts, then you can switch to disc brakes pretty cheaply. You can get some mechanical disc brakes such as the Avid BB7's for roughly $100, which will allow you to use your current brake levers.

No way to know if this is even possible without the make and model of your bike. You have to have mounting points on the frame and fork as well as disc compatible hubs on your wheels. In general, if a bike isn't equipped with disc brakes, it probably will cost as much to upgrade as it would to simply buy a better bike.

Start by providing the make and model of your bike

Upgrade your V brakes or buy a new bike. I have V brakes and they work fine. I would rather have good V brakes then cheap disk brakes.

TO disc brakes, not TOO disc brakes.

In addition TO the needed mounting points on the bike, it would also require disc specific wheels. By the time you figure the price of calipers, rotors & TWO new wheels - you're looking at the price of a new bike. Not cost effective.
