Is this a decent mountain terrain bicycle?

I know it is a Mongoose, do not laugh to hard!

I am 6’2” and weigh 240. I am not fat, but I am defiantly not small. I currently own a 26” mountain bike with rim breaks. I ride though rough terrain, and sometimes water. The rim breaks are horrible when they get wet.

I also have the saddle all the way up on my 26” bike, and it is a little to short for me.

I am riding in Phoenix, in the river bottoms. Some have about 5-6” of water year round.

My girlfriend is out of work. I am the sole income of the house for a while. I, at least for this season, do not have the money to invest in a nicer bike. Also I used to have a very expensive maintain bike by ‘Specialized’. It was stolen. Some dude actually climbed a fence to get it. I think a Wal-Mart bike is less likely to be absconded with.

What do you think? Would you buy this bargain?

"What do you think? Would you buy this bargain?"

I'd go 500 miles out of my way to avoid buying a bike from any discount store. Why do you think a bike shop bike with disc brakes starts about $600 to $700 and Wally World bikes are cheaper? Could it be inferior parts? I think so.

Furthermore...29" wheel won't make the seat get any higher, necessarily. Bike are measured by frame size, not wheel size. At 6' 2" tall you need a frame bigger than what they sell at Wally World or any discount store.

If $$$ is the problem, look on craigslist for a quality used bike that sold from a real bike shop in about a 20" frame roughly. Then go try it. Links below...and there are more. All you need do is look.

i would avoid wal-mart bikes. the cheap mechanical disc brakes on this bike are worth more than the entire bike itself. if you ever shop around for disc brakes, you'd know that a decent pair will run you about $120 for the pair. you mentioned you were on a tight budget, but that doesn't mean you can't afford a nice bike. most bike shops will finance. if not, i'd rather look for a used shop-quality bike on craigslist, ebay, or pinkbike. also, it's not the size of the tire (26") that matters for someone your height, it's the size of the frame. they also make 29" bikes for someone who is only 5'6".

Here's the catch, read the sticker on the seat post it will say something like "not intended for off-road use".

Just because it looks like a mountain bike doesn't make it one.

I'd look for a different bike.
