Does it matter what type of inner tube I buy for a mountain bike (as long as it's the right size)?

I am trying to buy an inner tube for my Dad for Christmas (it's the only thing on his list at this point!). He rides an '05 (I think) Specialized Stump Jumper mountain bike.

I was told I need a 26-2 tire (whatever that means) and I would like for him to be able to pump it up with a regular old hand bike pump (shrader valve?).

Is there anyhting to look for when buying tubes? Are road bike tubes different?

Get a tube that says 26 x 1.90/2,2 it will cover most mountain bike tires. The schrader valves are like the valves on cars presta valves are thinner. You want to get a tube with presta valves if that is what he has now, a schrader valve wont fit in the valve hole. You can always get a presta vale adapter at the local bike shop $1 so he can use a regular floor pump. If the valve is like a car valve you are ok.

Most inner tubes have a size range printed on the box. It would not be a good idea to use an inner tube, especially a slime tube whose size range is outside the tire size. Slime tubes are not very effective, and very messy if they fail, which often happens. If you want flat protection, buy better quality puncture resistant tires. Don't fear flats, they are easy to deal with if you learn how
