Question:
Should I just upgrade parts of my bike?

Hi, I'm thinking of upgrading my Next/Dynacraft "MTB" (BSO) so that it would be able to pass as a "good" mountain bike.

Is this even possible?
All I need to upgrade are the terrible v brakes. I have had numerous problems with them even though I know how to tweak them. Do you think it's smart to upgrade to disc brakes?

I'd rather just spend less on upgrades to my bike than getting a new bike (Giant Revel 1).
Should I?
Can I?
What's your opinion?

* I can afford a Giant Revel 4, but I really would rather spend less than $300 instead of $500-$600

What could be the problem with your V brakes? I have some version of those in several of my bikes and they work fine. The last set I installed works like a charm. Maybe you need a new set for about $20 at your bike shop. Mine perform like they are much more expensive.

There are not so many things that could go wrong with a mechanical brake. Either the cable is stuck or rusty, the pads are worn or glazed, or the arms are bent out of shape. Really, there are not more parts in a brake. So what could be wrong to require new brakes.

On the other hand I have some cantilever since 1989 and still work fine. You could try to install some of those in the same mountings.

But forget about installing disks. Your frame can't take those and you will need new wheels. Disk brakes do not work better unless you ride a lot of down hill on water and mud.

No, it is never smart to go from V to disc no matter what type of bike. Your fork doesn't have the right mount and your hubs don't have the flange for the rotor. A decent shock is at least $300, wheels are at least $200-$300 for a set. If you want disc, one buys a disc equipped bike.

Your BSO is not worth upgrading anything. Try better brake pads.
