Cannondale Maddux C2 Urban SL, 32 hole max tyre width?

Hi,

I have a Cannondale Bad Boy r4 Fatty rigid with Maddux C2 Urban SL, 32 hole rims and Scwalbe Kojak slick 700 x 28c tyres and I am looking to get some wider cyclocross tyres onto it for better grip and comfort on Cycle paths etc.

Can anyone tell me what the max width of tyre I'd be able to fit? I realise these will slow me down but that doesn't bother me.

Thanks for any help.

Tony

So take a look at the bike. You can measure the amount of clearance between your current tire and the frame. You need to have a couple of mm clearance between the frame and the tire, so if there is currently 4 mm of clearance you can use a tire that reduces the clearance by a couple of mm. However, tires do not always measure the same, some 32mm tires are wider than others and rim width also affects the tire profile. You could probably install 700 x 32 tires without problems. Comfort will improve with wider tires provided you also reduce tire pressure. Grip will not change all that much. Wider tires do not necessarily increase rolling resistance, and on rough surfaces can actually reduce rolling resistance provided that the wider tires are as good as the narrow ones they replace

For bike paths I use a hybrid with 700 X 32c tires and them seem to work fine except in deep loose gravel. You can probably go to 35 mm wide tires without any problem. You really don't need cyclocross tires on bike paths. The wider tire wont be as squirly in gravel.
